Bodnant Garden

Bodnant is big. Big in size: there are 80 acres of it and it contains the tallest Giant Redwood in the country at 47 metres high. And even bigger in reputation.

Garden writer Stephen Lacey calls it “nothing short of stupendous… a masterpiece”. Daily Telegraph readers, who know a thing or two, voted it Britain’s favourite garden. And the Antiques Roadshow was so impressed it filmed here in September 2008.

Bodnant’s five Italianate terraces overlooking a wooded valley – created by generations of Aberconways and now looked after by the National Trust – are big on colour, too.

From mid May to early June, the 55 metre-long laburnum arch drips with gold. And the autumn colours of the Japanese maples, rowans and birches simply defy description. Although the word “spectacular” may possibly spring to mind.

Love gardens?

Don’t miss the 18th century walled garden at the National Trust’s Erddig near Wrexham. Officially Britain’s second favourite stately home.
